Deforestation-free principle

The deforestation-free principle is a key requirement under the EUDR. It ensures that commodities (soy, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, rubber, cattle, and wood) placed on or exported from the EU market are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation after December 31, 2020.

This cut-off date means that products must be traceable to land that has not been subject to deforestation or forest degradation since the end of 2020. Companies must verify this through geolocation data and satellite monitoring. The principle applies regardless of whether the deforestation was legal under local laws — a significant distinction from previous regulations. Both operators and traders must ensure compliance with this principle as part of their due diligence obligations.
