About
Hogewoning

Hogewoning is a Dutch wholesaler specialising in home decoration, hobby materials, and pet supplies. The company imports products from China and India, operating its own offices in two regions of China and working with an agency in India.

Sustainability is embedded across everything Hogewoning does. From social compliance and supplier codes of conduct to certification programs including FSC (for sustainable forestry), GRS (for recycled materials), and Better Cotton. With a high proportion of wood-based products in its assortment, ensuring responsible and traceable sourcing has long been a core priority.

Sustainability and compliance are integrated in all processes at Hogewoning and are managed by a dedicated two-person team: Therèse, Manager Sustainability & Compliance and David, Data Analyst Sustainability & Compliance.

The challenge

When the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) came into scope, Hogewoning recognised the significant administrative burden it would create. While the company was already well-prepared in many respects, having worked under the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) and maintaining FSC certification across its wood product range, EUDR introduced new requirements around geo-location data and enhanced risk assessments.

Previously, compliance documentation was gathered manually by overseas offices and stored in individual product files. With EUDR's scope and data requirements, the team needed a dedicated solution to centralise evidence collection, reduce manual workload, and ensure nothing slipped through the cracks.

As Therese put it: the biggest challenge was the sheer administrative mountain they could see ahead of them.

Why Coolset?

Hogewoning evaluated multiple providers before selecting Coolset. The decision came down to a combination of factors:

  • Coolset's proactive approach and eagerness to stay ahead of regulatory developments
  • Deep domain expertise: the team felt confident they were working with people who genuinely understood the regulatory landscape
  • Responsiveness: questions raised were consistently answered quickly, and product feedback was visibly acted upon

The constant flux of EUDR's enforcement timeline made this responsiveness particularly valuable. Hogewoning needed a partner who would stay on top of every development, so they didn't have to.

The impact
Customer success

Hogewoning works primarily with Coolset's customer success team for day-to-day support. The collaboration is described as efficient and pleasant, with David in close contact on the practical side, and Therese involved in strategic oversight and decision-making.

Weekly update emails summarising platform changes have been particularly appreciated, keeping the team informed without requiring them to track every update themselves. Feedback shared by Hogewoning has also been picked up and implemented within the product, which has reinforced the sense of a genuine partnership.

The team has also engaged with Coolset's broader knowledge resources, including webinars on adjacent topics such as PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), reflecting an ongoing relationship that extends beyond EUDR alone.

Favourite features
  • Proactive regulatory updates: Weekly emails summarising platform changes kept the team informed through a constantly shifting enforcement landscape, without them having to track it themselves.
  • Responsive feedback loop: Suggestions from Hogewoning were visibly acted on in the product, reinforcing the feel of a genuine partnership rather than a transactional vendor relationship.
  • Deep domain expertise: The Coolset team consistently demonstrated up-to-date regulatory knowledge, giving Hogewoning confidence when navigating complex requirements like geo-location data and NVWA audits.
  • Knowledge resources & webinars: The team actively signed up for Coolset webinars beyond EUDR - on topics like PPWR - making Coolset a broader sustainability resource, not just a single-regulation tool.

What's next?

Hogewoning is preparing for EUDR compliance: supplier awareness has been raised, traceability expectations have been communicated to overseas offices, and the geo-location data challenge - a key sticking point - has been resolved within the Coolset platform.

Hogewoning is confident the regulation will proceed in some form and intends to move forward once the regulatory picture stabilises. Coolset will be their platform of choice to manage compliance end-to-end.
