About
Alpina Group

Alpina Group is a financial services company specialising in insurance advice, underwriting, brokerage, and mortgages. Operating across the Netherlands and Belgium, the company has evolved into its current form since 2021, bringing together multiple predecessor organisations with deep regional roots.

Sustainability is a genuine strategic priority at Alpina Group. The company sees ESG performance as a driver of business quality, long-term value, and risk management. Alpina Group advises its clients on emerging sustainability-related risks, including the electrification of vehicle fleets, energy transitions, and sustainable damage repair.

Sustainability is coordinated by Bas van Twillert, Manager Sustainability, supported by a cross-functional steering group with representation at board level.

The challenge

Alpina Group had access to significant operational data but lacked a structured, reliable method to translate that data into a credible GHG emissions measurement. Scope 1 and 2 calculations were being done manually, with limited assurance around methodology and comparability.

As reporting requirements matured, driven by both CSRD legislation and the expectations of Alpina Group's key shareholder, this approach was no longer sufficient. Year-on-year fluctuations in reported emissions raised questions that couldn't be confidently answered: where were the differences coming from, and what actions should follow?

The team needed a solution that aligned with the GHG Protocol, provided a clear and transparent calculation methodology, and could support both internal steering and external reporting.

Why Coolset?

Alpina Group evaluated a wide range of providers - both domestic and international - before selecting Coolset. Several factors drove the decision:

  • Peer validation: A strong peer reference from Meijers, a fellow insurance market participant that had faced the same challenges and found Coolset to be the right solution.
  • Simplicity: A pragmatic, no-nonsense commercial approach. Alpina Group appreciated the clarity of Coolset's proposal: transparent pricing, a clear scope, and no unnecessary complexity.
  • Focused expertise: Product focus. Coolset's targeted scope gave Alpina Group confidence in the depth of what was being delivered.

This same directness has continued to characterise the working relationship.

The impact

Since partnering with Coolset, Alpina Group has moved from ad hoc emissions calculations to a structured, GHG Protocol-aligned process. The platform provides clarity on where emissions originate across all three scopes and, crucially, helps contextualise the differences between reporting periods.

Alpina Group is currently in the process of preparing its annual sustainability report. The insights being generated through Coolset are feeding directly into that work, helping Bas present results to the management board and informing the refinement of Alpina Group's reduction targets.

The team now has a clear picture of where to focus: which emissions categories are most significant, where influence is possible, and which parts of the business require attention.

Customer success

Alpina Group describes the collaboration with Coolset as smooth, fast, and service-oriented. The team consistently experiences a responsive and knowledgeable partner.

Onboarding was handled efficiently, with relevant internal stakeholders brought in early and lines of communication kept short. The Coolset team's speed of execution has been particularly valued given Alpina Group's reporting deadlines.

Bas also highlighted the quality of the second-layer support: not just delivering data, but helping interpret it and frame it for different audiences, including a non-technical management board.

What's next?

Alpina Group's near-term focus is on completing its 2025 sustainability report, the first to be built on a fully structured and GHG Protocol-aligned foundation.

Looking ahead, the team plans to use Coolset's insights to sharpen its emissions reduction strategy: setting more specific and measurable targets, identifying the highest-leverage intervention areas, and improving the quality and consistency of underlying data over time.

The VSME module will also be explored in depth, with the aim of producing a sustainability report that communicates clearly and compellingly to Alpina Group's full range of stakeholders.
