Stakeholder mapping is the process of identifying individuals or groups affected by, or able to influence, a company's activities. Under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), it involves understanding both the nature of the impact on stakeholders and their position within or in relation to the company.
Effective stakeholder mapping is a critical input to the double materiality assessment required under CSRD. Companies must categorize stakeholders into affected stakeholders (employees, communities, supply chain workers) and users of sustainability statements (investors, regulators, civil society). The ESRS requires companies to describe their stakeholder engagement process and explain how stakeholder views influenced the identification of material topics.
