Materiality matrix

A materiality matrix is a visual tool used in CSRD reporting to rank sustainability matters by significance and prioritization. It combines impact and financial materiality, using Likert scales (1–5) to assess magnitude, from insignificant to significant, and likelihood, from very low to very high.

In practice, the materiality matrix helps companies identify which sustainability topics require disclosure under the ESRS. It serves as the visual output of the double materiality assessment, mapping each topic according to both its impact on people and the environment, and its financial relevance to the business. Stakeholder input is typically incorporated to ensure the matrix reflects diverse perspectives.
